About the Hike
A tradition on the Bangor waterfront
Over the past year, more than 2,000 individuals visited the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter in need of a clean, safe place to stay, a warm meal, and other supportive services.
Thankfully, the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter (BAHS) was there for them. BAHS is open 24 hours a day/365 days a year. A paid staff of 12 FTEs, supported by volunteers, provide people experiencing homelessness with shelter, crisis intervention, hot meals and a safe environment as well as connections with special services including medical and psychiatric care. Currently, 71% of the people who stay at the Shelter have a major mental illness, chronic addictions and/or medical issues. Their needs are great.
State and Federal funds only provide 21% of the Shelter's budget of nearly $540,000. Donations are what allow the shelter to stay open and provide assistance to so many people. All the money raised at the Hike supports the homeless right here in Greater Bangor.
Too many people are homeless in our community. Join us in making a difference. Together let's tell homelessness to take a hike in our region!
While a donation is not required to participate in the Hike, we encourage those participating to seek pledges. If everyone does a little, a lot can be accomplished!
